Commercial Food Waste

By 31st March 2025, businesses will have to adhere to new legislation which requires separate food waste collections.

 

These changes are being introduced following a recent Government consultation. The aim is to streamline waste management processes and reduce the impact of food waste on the environment.

 

What does it mean for businesses?

• Mandatory separate food waste collection

​​From 31 March 2025, all non-municipal premises will need to arrange for separate food waste collections. This includes businesses with 10 or more staff, institutions, and other non-residential buildings that generate any amount of food waste.

​

• Presentation of food waste

All food waste will need to be segregated from other types of waste and stored in designated bins or containers, ready for collection.

​​

• Failure to comply

Businesses who do not follow the legislation will face potential penalties.
